Join us for fresh air and un-learning on Camberwell Green, where doors that are open to the wise are also open to the foolish. Performances, interactions and interventions dissecting the institutions of learning in a class room without walls.

School, university, college - the happiest days of your life, or a recurring nightmare? ‘They’ made you go to school, you survived and now, post-compulsory education, you’re free to learn something that interests you, just as long as you can afford it.

The Chutney Preserves will remove any degree of knowledge, facilitating your unlearning and return you to a classless state of pre-educated happiness.

Never graduated, well now you can as Miyuku Kasahara invites all to be Chutney Graduates, complete with graduation certificate and photograph. Sign up for the school of plain livin' and hard studyin' where you can experience a program of unpardonable actions until sundown with the Lonesome Cowboys from Hell (Tim Flitcroft, Calum F. Kerr, and various miscreants).

Daniel Lehan will be teaching your grandmother to suck eggs. Realise the potential of your vocal powers with Joanna McCormick- are you an angel or a warthog. Prizes and accolades for every one in Frog Morris’ and Mark Dean Quinn’s’ ‘Unwrong Quizz’, the exam with no right or wrong answers. In secret hide outs and camouflaged in the vegetation of Camberwell Green, Ian Robinson and Vanessa Scully's ‘guerrilla gardening school is looking for new recruits to train in the art of seed bombing. Shaman Liam Scully will take you on a personal journey of discovery from inside his smoke house tepee. PEPOMO invite ALL to the School re-union, creating an environment which facilitates the experience of a shared memory with a bunch of people you never knew. Jacqueline Utley with her ' Daily Report ' will collate drawings and thoughts on the theme of ‘rules for The Paper Museum at the School of Chutney’. Sinead Wheeler has done her homework on a banned book.

From 1279 until 1855 a fayre was held on Camberwell Green, one of the many attractions was a menagerie of wild animals captured from distant lands. In homage to the beasts of the ancient Camberwell Fayre, artists will create a fair and foul enclosure of luxurious and curious beasts, transforming the Green into a safari park for human animals and their keepers, with beastly goings on, sideshows and a program of performance in ‘the big top’

'PEPOMO' with 'ANIMUSIMAL' the PEPOMO group will dress in home-made animal costumes, sing songs, and dance, with live backing music, including adding a new 'exotic' character - especially for Chutney Preserves
6.00pm - assemble outside Captain Magnos Camper Van on the Green -
the intrepid explorer Capt. Magno will present to the general public the last surviving specimen of a nearly mythical beast, recently brought back from his most recent Amazonian expedition. This mysterious animal that has no ears or eyes has yet remained in a state of comatose slumber. It is rumoured that it's only known defence mechanism on being awoken is an extreme form of spontaneous combustion.

Charlie Fox and the Urban Bear Research Centre - Turning the tide of ethology, bear and comrades will be sharing the rules and manners of contemporary bear etiquette. Humans will be invited to enter Urban Bear’s special acclimatized tent to share tips on the latest fashion, movements and manners from ursatopia. Debretts meets Selfridges, Urban Bear spares no man or woman in search for answers to animal/human behaviours, in a make-it-up research programme

Through a series of interventions, an attempt will be made to resurrect, or recreate, the lost ancient symbolic creature.
Calum F Kerr -Dr Gerald Van Elk presents: Are You Wild Enough? Dr Gerald Van Elk is Camberwell’s leading Ethologist. He is conducting a study on the wild behaviour of animals, human and non-human alike on the Green. He will present a short lecture and interview throughout the day the animal menagerie asking questions pertaining to his research and performing tests relating to Aggression; Communication; Group Behaviour; Instinct; Learning and Reproduction.
Please note: Dr Van Elk is NOT a member of the APBC (Association of Pet Behavioural Councillors).
Jacqueline Utley - brings small enclosures to the green; where tales from past fairs merge with the fictional creating parallel miniature worlds which visitors can help build.

Disciples! Amongst the creaking and popping of emerging green stuff, you will hear the gargling voice of chutney, summoning you, the righteous and others, to assemble at the chosen place on the given day. In the beginning there was the word, and the word gave voice, and the voice is now calling, and it say’s “Chutney”.
This year we shall again congregate on Camberwell Green from noon till sundown, on the last day of Camberwell’s Arts Festival. Our event plans to explore the wild and varied appeal and repulsion of cults and to temporarily turn the green into Camp Chutney.
Logan’s Run, Big Brother, The Midwich Cuckoo’s - the popularity of other people’s weirdness and strange beliefs have kept many of us entertained for years, whether real of fictitious. We are fascinated by the groupings and clannish tendencies that develop under particular individuals. Rulers and governors desire to see their own obsessions spawning, mutating and corrupting the minds of others. Now it’s our turn.
Artists have been invited to orbit our large marquee. Of the responses we have had back, there is promise of chanting, sermonising, wearing religious robes, de-ciphering alien geometries, offering mind altering experiences, creating visual traps, playing with auditory manipulation, mixing seductive aromas and double dealing the general public. More than 40 artists have will be commissioned to create art works, interactive activities and performances for public consumption, all in the spirit of collaboration, exploration and exchange. In the tradition of the historic Camberwell fair, the event will culminate with a performance of fighting puppets made by Chutney artists.

PUPPET WARS AT CHUTNEY 3

Following in the tradition of the historic Camberwell fayre, Chutney 3 will culminate with a puppet show featuring fighting marionettes. 12 artists have been commissioned to make puppets of those abusing power: political, personal, sociological or symbolic . In a perverse twist of power dynamics, the puppet masters take control of their abusers, taking them into the ring to fight until their opponents come unstrung!

Chutney Preserves - Two:
The Rot Sets In’
Sunday 22nd of June, 2008, on Camberwell Green, Camberwell – 2pm till 7pm
A juxtaposition of workplace with exhibition stage, or perhaps more coherently, experimental lab with ceremonial site, ‘The Rot Sets In’, is decorated like a fete with small gazebos and stalls, and a rotten twist. The fete is in effect, a one day public art work, which visitors to the green can interact with, or just observe if they choose. It will be a humorous and thought provoking display of a broad range of temporary art works and artists that will make reference and take resources from the fine borough of Camberwell.

Sarah Doyle will offer weeds, rescued from between the cracks of the paving stones of Camberwell’s’ streets, from her garden stall, whilst Naomi St Clair Clarke has made an effigy which you can ‘make clean’ with a wet sponge missile. Lady Lucy is a rotten portrait artist, offering to make rotten portraits of visitors to the green from her park bench, possibly beside Rachael House who shall be sharing edible dog poo from a dogs bottom. Ami Clarke will pluck small gifts from her bearded chin, Ben Woodeson will display a number of hand-printed t-shirts of Mayor Johnson, and Miriam Craik-Horan shall respond to Mendelssohn with a lawn mower engine on her face. Jo David proposes to create a cardboard obelisk and miss-information desk with rotten visitor information about Camberwell, Sarah Sparkes will send down messages from her nest in the hanging tree. Andrew Cooper has a composting Wicker Man lying on Camberwell’s lawn and Dean Kenning will ceremonially hoist a totem pole at sundown, made during the day, from collected bottles and cans. Rebecca Feiner will invite passers-by to rant about issues in ‘Ranter’s Corner’. As they do she will make a picture of them and display these, framed on a table. Julian Wakeling has taken a beautiful photograph of pears decomposing. He has made it into postcards and will write messages for visitors to take away. Libby Shearon has transferred images of hobby horses and other spirits from the land onto business men’s white shirts, and Marq P Kearey has a muddy pool with ambitions to facilitate low ebb’s, whilst Geraldine Swayne shall cheer us all with rotten ballads, channelling voices from folk singers who frequented the green in days gone by. Continuing the musical responses, The Lonesome Cowboys From Hell, Calum F Kerr, Tim Flitcroft, Jan Maat and Marc Vaulbert de Chantilly, parade as The Wild ‘Worst’ on Camberwell Green with a rotten western arena, complete with fake camp fire. cApStAn StRiNg a rebel rouser, will embody the spirit of Captain Swing, the long dead peasant agitator. Darren O’Brien has been trying to train worms to make paintings – visitors will be invited to pick a worm to make a muddy painting that they can take away. Be repulsed by Gavin Toye’s revolting paintings and then hit a rotten egg on Ben Newton’s dart board game and take home a jar of green chutney.

Come, come, come along to the great festival of Camberwell Green – ‘The Rot Sets In’.
